The aims of the second meeting were:
  1. Presentation of activities made by each school
  2. Evaluation of the partnership progress
  3. Discussion of possible problems
  4. Decisions of the format of the next assignments
  5. Planning the next activities
  6. Reminding the period of future project meetings
  7. Comenius SHAPE products (website, mascot/logo, flag, song and dance, first questionnaires results, presentations, photos; CDs/DVDs)
  8. Decisions connected with the 3rd meeting in Romania
The participants arrived on the 28th of January 2013. On 29th of January 2013, in the morning, we walk to school where students, teachers and the managing team of IES Los Cristianos welcomed us. The principals held a brief speech about the school and the city. The students performed the Spanish proposal for the Comenius SHAPE song, “Healthy People, Healthy Life”. After that, we were offered a visit around the school, from the environmental area to the classrooms and the sports ground. Later, teacher and students attended a lesson of Spanish: “Spanish to survive”, taught by 2 teachers from the English and Spanish Language Department. We all received a diploma at the end of this class. During the break, we had a healthy breakfast, as promoting healthy habits is one of our project’s major objectives. On this occasion, we tasted 2 of the basic elements of the Canary Islands diet: bananas and gofio. In the afternoon, the Comenius team had a work session with a focus on the following issues:
  1. Reinforcing the period of future meetings
  2. Presenting the accomplished tasks from our previous meeting in Belgium till now: “Nice to meet you!”, “Landmarks of a healthy life”, “Shape display”, “Move for health”
  3. Discussing the running activities: “What kind of lifestyle do you have?”, “Typical fruit and vegetables in my country”
  4. Discussing the future activities: According to the calendar of activities, the project coordinator made a detailed plan for each activity (title, suggestions for their implementation, deadline, final products and ways of making them). The detailed analyze of next assignments can be found in “Decisions of the work session, Los Cristianos, February 28th – February the 2nd 2013” document.
  5. Decisions connected with the meeting in Romania: the coordinators were asked to send the number of participants to the Romanian coordinator as soon as possible.
While teachers participated in the work session, students built the FOOD PYRAMID under the guidance of 3 Spanish teachers.
In the afternoon, under the guidance of 2 Spanish teachers and with the help of 4 Spanish students, teachers participated in a relaxing workshop about how to create an own friendly garden at home.
On the 30th of January, in the morning, we made a documentary visit to Las Cañadas National Park. We started at the Visitors Centre where we first watched a documentary film about the origin of Canary Islands and volcanoes like Teide. Then, we were offered a guided tour around the park and saw the Roques de García and Llano Ucanca. In the afternoon, we climbed down from 2 000 meters high to the Atlantic Ocean. We got on a boat in Los Cristianos harbor to see the whales and the dolphins in their natural environment. Amazing experiences!
On the 31st of January we were welcomed by the regional authorities in Tenerife’s Cabildo. On this occasion we were offered interesting information about the history of Canary Islands. Later, we were offered a documentary visit in Puerto de la Cruz, at a banana plantation and at FAST, the factory where bananas from different plantations in the region are packed and prepared to be exported for selling. Bananas are representative for Canary Islands, being an important product for export and a basic element of the local people’s diet. It was also a unique experience for people coming from countries were banana trees cannot be cultivated to see how bananas grow. In the afternoon, we walked around Rambla de Castro, in Los Realejos. There we could see a colonial house, a big banana plantation and one of the oldest and still preserved palm trees forest in the island. It was a special occasion for us to walk in the open air, to enjoy the magnificent panorama of the ocean embracing the shores and of the exotic vegetation. Preserving the good mood and happiness is a way for keeping ourselves in a healthy state from a physical and mental point of view.
On the 1st of February we attended a special sports activity entitled “gymkhana”. Together with students and teachers from host school, we had a lot of fun by participating in an exhilarating sports contest. In the afternoon, we spent some hours in Siam Park - the most spectacular water park in Europe. We enjoyed the incredible sunny weather with 31 degrees and tried as many of the park’s attractions as possible. It was an incredibly enjoyable ending of an unforgettable meeting.
The meeting’s programme was highly connected with our project’s theme – healthy lifestyle, was very well organized and offered us the opportunity of meeting warm and hospitable people, of improving our knowledge on other educational systems and on other countries’ elements of culture and civilization.
